POPOL VUH and ROBERTO CACCIAPAGLIA - Live at Università Statale, Milano (Italy), 1975
This is a mythical concert, where Popol Vuh where introduced to the Italian audience. The concert was promoted by the 'Gong' magazine (a magazine about progressive-experimental rock), after R.U. Kaiser established an agreement with the PDU label for licensing the Ohr/Pilz/DKK records in Italy.
PDU was (and still is) an Italian record label, owned by father of famous pop singer Mina; of course, the label was created for producing and distributing the records of Mina. However, during mid 70's, the label decided to enlarge its spectrum and started to produce a lot of interesting records. Among them, folk (Alan Stivell, Lyonesse), jazz-rock (Andrea Centazzo), Italian prog (Cincinnato, Logan Dwight) and of course a lot of krautrock.
The deal with Kaiser allowed the label to press under license many Ohr, Pilz and DKK records: Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Cosmic Jokers, Mythos, Ash Ra Tempel, etc. These records sold a lot at the time, as they were pressed in large amounts and very well distributed. There were even Italian pressings of 'Tarot' and 'Lord Krishna von Goloka' (both with original, unique covers). Some PDU records were only pressed in Italy, such as POPOL VUH 'YOGA', POPOL VUH 'PERLENKLÄNGE' (a sampler), ASH RA TEMPEL 'COMMUNICATION' (another sampler), POPOL VUH 'AGUIRRE' (this one was also pressed in France). Among the artists produced by Kaiser under the PDU label, there was the Italian electronic musician Roberto Cacciapaglia, whose first LP 'Sonanze' was published by PDU only under Kaiser's production.

I received this as a cassette in 1989, thus there cannot be any MP3s in the lineage (they did not exist then).
Likely lineage: Boot_LP -> unknown turntable and deck -> XLII90 cassette Dolby-B encoded
There are a few pops or thumps towards the beginning (from vinyl ?), they go away after a few minutes.
I left this as one track, because I can't imagine listening to only one Popol Vuh song - this isn't the Rolling Stones.
The following information is likely to be correct.
This is a soundboard recording of a live performance in 1973, probably late summer or early fall, in the church in Baumberg in Germany (which accounts for the beautiful natural reverb).
My guess is that this is just Daniel Fichelscher on guitar and Florian Fricke on keyboards and vocal (and may be the first recording of Fichelscher as a member of Popol Vuh - he would become co-partner with Fricke for all subsequent Popol Vuh albums. Vocalist Djong Yun did not sing here, because she was away in America at the time. Fricke's dissatisfaction with his vocals - heard here and on the studio album from 1973, "Seligpreisung" - would prompt him to later add another vocalist, Renate Knaup, whom he met through Fichelscher (both Fichelscher and Knaup had been members of Amon Duul II).
Song list (all are extended versions of the following pieces from their 1973 album "Seligpreisung"):
1)Weinen und Lachen
2)Hungern und Dursten
3)Hungern und Dursten (2nd take)
4)Willig Arm
5)Leid Klagen
6) Interview (German)
33 minutes of music followed by a 12 minute interview, which sounds like it was recorded in a park - because they sometimes have to pause to let a truck go by.

Originally a one-off for Klaus Schulze's Innovative Communications label. This music was later used as a soundtrack to Fitzcarraldo by Werner Herzog (1982).
Review:
"Recorded in 1980 and produced by Klaus Schulze, Sei Still, Wisse ICH BIN (Is quiet, knows I AM) is one of Popol Vuh's sacred music offerings. Like Hosianna Mantra nearly
a decade before, this set is regal in its solemnity and in its intensity. Utilizing the Chorensemble der Bayerischen Staatsoper and the soprano saxophone stylings of Chris Karrer, Popol Vuh -- down to a three-piece with vocalist Renate Knaup fronting the choir, Fricke on piano and voice, and guitarist Daniel Fichelscher holding down the drum chair as well, this is a huge recording . Schulze's immediate mix, which brings the vocals into complete balance with the undulating, mantra-like instrumentation, is nothing less than stunning; from Tibetan-style prayer chants to Eastern Orthodox choral scales, from thundering bass drums and cymbals to snaky, elusive, sparse electric guitar lines and Fricke's trademark shimmering piano, each of this album's seven selections is its own kind of masterpiece. It is the perfect marriage of world music utilized in rock & roll fashion, and of both being placed at the service of the Sacred. It is nothing less than awe-inspiring. -- Thom Jurek"
